Carl W. “Bub” Dreher was a founding member of Cub Scout Pack 72 when they first formed in Strasburg in 1948, at that time he was 9 years old. He continued through the Cub program, graduating out of the Pack with his Arrow of Light Award and transitioned from a Cub Scout in Pack 72 to a Boy Scout in Troop 72. Bub continued through the Troop program and earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1956.
Bub and his wife Ruthie served Scouting in Strasburg during their boys’ participation during the 1960s and 1970s. After the boys aged out of the Troop, Bub took a break from Scouting leadership until his service was requested again in the very early 2000s, the exact year was prior to our now computerized world and is buried in paperwork in the local boy scout council’s attic archives.
Bub continued to serve scouting as our Chartering Organization Representative (COR – i.e. a liaison between the units, the Pack and the Troop, and St John UCC, our chartering organization) until he was called home to heaven on October 1, 2023. At one point during this tenure, Strasburg also had a Venture Crew, which Bub also served as COR for this third Scouting unit during its existence of 3 years.
During these 20-ish years, not only did Bub assist with all aspects of his registered leadership role, he was instrumental in supporting the financial needs of boy scouts whose families needed assistance to send them to the week-long summer camp program. Bub had a network of men, many of them who had been scouts as youth and some not, who he would connect with and secure donations to be specifically directed to financial assistance for those boys’ summer camp registration fees. Bub also sat on the committee for many of our boy scouts’ higher ranking Boards of Review for the Life and Eagle Scout ranks.
The number of youth supported and influenced by Bub’s involvement in Strasburg Scouts since an estimated year of adult involvement beginning back in 1965 is immeasurable. Bub truly believed in the Scouting movement’s ideals, he did not leave the Scout Oath and Scout Law behind as rules to live by as a youth, they were his moral compass which he followed and exemplified throughout his lifetime.
It is for these reasons that the Strasburg Scouts chose to honor Bub Dreher by naming our meeting place in his memory. A public dedication ceremony was held on July 27, 2024, with his wife and family present.
